Bombing of Katherine
Bombing of Katherine Commemoration
Join us as we gather to remember and honour those affected by the Bombing of Katherine during World War II.
On 22 March 1942, Katherine was targeted in a Japanese air raid as part of a series of attacks across Northern Australia. The town’s airfield and railway facilities were bombed due to their strategic importance in supporting Allied operations following the bombing of Darwin just weeks earlier. Several bombs were dropped, causing damage to infrastructure and resulting in civilian casualties.
This commemoration is an opportunity to reflect on this significant chapter in Katherine’s history, acknowledge the resilience of our community, and pay tribute to those who lived through and were impacted by the attack.
Date: Sunday 22nd March 2026
Time: 10:00am start
All members of the community are welcome to attend and pay their respects.
If you would like to lay a wreath in remembrance of the fallen, please email the Katherine Heritage Museum to add your name to the wreath-laying list.
